ANNUAL MARIANNE ALI BRUNCH, MAY 3
The second annual Marianne Ali Brunch sponsored by LDE-DC will celebrate the 118th DC Central Kitchen graduating class and take place at 10:00 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. on Friday, May 3 at DC Central Kitchen, 425 2nd Street, NW. We should plan to prepare at least 12 different dishes for 35 people for brunch. Click here to participate on SignUpGenius. There is space on the SignUpGenius form to indicate any special serving equipment needs. The kitchen will provide all beverages, plates and utensils and serving pieces and equipment. Please deliver food by 9:30 a.m. which is also when street parking near the kitchen becomes available. Dames can leave the food at the DCCK entrance (the alley loading dock), and then leave to find a parking spot. DCCK's Liz Reinert will try to save a few spaces in the lot, but we shouldn't count on it.

Wednesday, February 20th 12:30 pm Women make up the majority of the culinary workforce but not the majority of executive chefs, investors or owners of their own businesses. It's more important than ever before to change that paradigm. In today's culinary culture there are women working hard to create value programming empowering women to attain their goals and become culinary leaders. In this webinar you'll hear from two culinary luminaries, Katherine Miller, from the James Beard Foundation and Joanna James, creator of the award winning film "A Fine Line." Both are working tirelessly to develop and amplify inventive ways to mentor and launch women into leadership. They'll share how they are empowering others to lead through women-focused programming they have integrated into the culinary community. Katherine Miller Vice President of Impact, James Beard Foundation @beardfoundation Katherine Miller is an award-winning communications executive, campaign strategist, and social media expert who leads a team dedicated to engaging the culinary community in the ongoing process of creating a sustainable food system for all. She is the founding executive director of the Chef Action Network (CAN) and has served as the Foundation's senior director of policy and advocacy since 2016. She developed and leads the Foundation's signature training program, the Chefs Boot Camp for Policy and Change. In September 2017, Katherine was named one of "The 2017 Most Innovative Woman in Food and Drink" by Fortune and Food & Wine. Before joining the good food movement, she developed and managed integrated campaigns for many of the world's leading socially responsible corporations and foundations including TIAA-CREF, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, MacArthur Foundation, and the United Nations Foundation. Her work has won numerous awards including the People's Choice Webby, Best Non-Profit Tagline of the Year, PR Grassroots Campaign of the year, and several Pollies (the political world's Academy Award). She is a board member of the New Venture Fund and RAINN (the U.S. national sexual assault hotline). She is a graduate of the Loyola University of New Orleans and, in her free time, she is perfecting her bread-baking techniques. Joanna James Director/Producer/Editor, "A Fine Line" @AFineLineMovie Joanna's directorial debut with A Fine Line, which she has produced and edited, has let to her passion of filmmaking and sharing people's stories. Joanna is the founder and CEO of Zoel Productions, an independent film, television and multimedia production company out of New York. Based on Joana's experience making this film, combined with years of research and interviews, she developed the MAPP Impact Campaign to increase women in leadership. Prior to filmmaking Joanna was awarded best environmental reporting by the New England Press Association for an investigative piece she wrote. She interned for the Boston Globe's National Foreign Desk, and was later chosen to cover the 2004 Summer Olympic Games in Athens for a Greek American Newspaper. As a creative entrepreneur, Joanna owns a patent having invented an exercise product line that went to market to help those in long-term care, mentally ill and with physical disabilities. Having gone from reporter to filmmaker, entrepreneur to women's rights organizer, now as a wife and mother, Joanna has found her calling. "There is no greater love I have than that for my family, but I refuse to be coerced into sitting on the sidelines instead of having a seat at the table. We need to stop making women choose between doing what they love and who they love." As with all LDEI Webinars, they are free to members but you must register in advance.
